Cycle 5s Call Politicians to Action

Year 9 student Samuel Ladley wrote a letter to Zoe Daniel MP on the benefits of encouraging roof-top solar at a local level as part of the climate change topic in science. Since Zoe’s office is just around the corner, he decided to hand deliver it in person.

Students wrote to a number of different politicians on a whole range of topics. Having choice over what you learn and do is a fundamental component of a Montessori classroom and these students were able to seek out and discover what issues are important to them.

Among the topics chosen was the environmental impacts of fast fashion, war, consumerism, and deforestation, as well as some letters advocating for positive change such as protecting Port Phillip Bay from invasive species, or using pumped storage hydro to ensure baseload supply as we switch to renewables. Yesterday we sent off these letters with great excitement.
