The Melbourne Montessori Senior School Robotics team won the Teamwork award on Sunday 19th November at the First Lego League Victorian regional competition. This was held at the Advanced Technology Centre at Swinburne University in Hawthorn, with the competition running from 8:15am until 4pm. the competition included 35 other teams from around Victoria. Team coach Paul Szymkowiak and Sarah Dekiere from the Cycle 4 teaching staff joined the team, along parents and family of team members visiting during the day.
This years team – Dallas, Ethan, Zara, Tiago, Alex & Harry – continued the trophy winning streak started last year, demonstrating good teamwork in a range of activities including overcoming one of the robotics challenges consistently. The judges commented that the main challenge our team focused on – Flipping over a Manhole Cover made of Lego – was one of the most technically challenging tasks for the robot to complete, and that no other team in Victoria had attempted to take on that mission. In all three of the robot competition sessions, the MMSS team showed consistent ability for their Robot to solve the problem, supported by enthusiastic team support and good grace in overcoming any problems that cropped up.
Some team highlights:
- Ethan put in well-considered and dedicated programming work, collaborating with Dallas and Tiago in building and documenting the robot to the satisfaction of the judges.
- Zara and Harry researched the problem of micro plastic in our water systems, and presented a project on a proposed solution based on their findings.
- Harry designed and coordinated the printing of team t-shirts for the first time this year, which the team wore proudly during the day, receiving lots of positive comments on the humorous design.
This year, the team undertook an expanded set of activities across more of the competition criteria, and that effort – in addition to the consistency of work on the robot – were key factors in the judges choice of the Teamwork award.
The team would like to thank all the parents and staff whose support contributed to a great competition season, with special thanks to Georgia Westaway for assistance on logistics on the T-shirt printing.
