Typically, Cycle Two children are at the stage of development that exhibits a strong desire to move in ‘packs.’ They have a need to work in groups and to explore their environment in an energetic and almost boisterous manner. They have mastered the art of oral language and are inquisitive about the world in which they live. They are wanting to know ‘why’, ‘how’ and ‘what’ of all that they encounter. They can be characterised by their questioning minds and their ability to begin to abstract and imagine.
At Cycle Two level, children begin simple research, endeavouring to answer questions they pose about the world.
Cycle Two and Three studies at Melbourne Montessori School include:
- Science (all branches)
- Physical education
It is important to note for those who do not know Montessori education that we cover all aspects of the state curriculum (soon to be the National Curriculum) but we do it in a different way. The work the children do on a day-to-day basis is much more hands-on, and based on Montessori materials. We link into working in the abstract at a later stage than mainstream schools, ensuring the children’s understandings are strong before moving to abstract thought.
